Week 1 results of 30-Day Challenge

It’s a bit late, but I thought I’d write an update on how the first week of the 30-Day Challenge went.

Just to recap, I have a list of tasks that I want to complete every day for 30 days. If I miss a task, I have to start over at Day 1. Here are the tasks:

  1. 30 minutes of exercise every day.
  2. Drink half of my weight in ounces of water every day.
  3. Read 10 pages from a personal development/self-help book.
  4. Take a progress pic every day.
  5. No alcohol or junk food.

I did really well Monday through Friday. On Saturday, I went to a bridal shower and decided that I wanted to sample some of the desserts, cheese and crackers. I also had some fresh fruit. Later, my husband and I had pizza for dinner. Looks like I’m starting over at Day 1, but I was honestly okay with it.

On Sunday, we had an early Mother’s Day celebration with my daughters, my sons-in-law, and my step-grandson. We had brunch so for the first time in forever I had a bagel with cream cheese and two donuts. They were so good. I didn’t feel one ounce of guilt over that! And then later I had my husband make me my favorite cocktail, a double sidecar.

And….starting over at Day 1. Again.

On Monday, I had all of my tasks done for the most part; I was eating healthy and drinking plenty of water and then at dinner time, after a long day at work, I decided I was too lazy to cook a healthy meal and we ate the leftover pizza.

Gah. This just isn’t going well, is it? It’s okay, though. The next day I woke up and said, “Back on track!” and over the last couple of days, I’ve completed all of my tasks.

I’ll be honest, getting these tasks done for 30 days in a row could take me a while. The weather is getting nicer, I love to sit outside with a cocktail or glass of wine, and my husband and I are planning a long weekend trip soon and I know it will be hard not to just enjoy some restaurant food and alcohol. But we also plan on doing a bike ride on that trip and I’m not planning on skipping my workouts, so mentally, I’m not beating myself up about this.

I think the most important thing that I’m learning from these challenges I give myself is that even though I’m not perfect, I still wake up every day, ready to start fresh, get on track, and just do the best I can. Most days I’m killing it. Other days, not so much. But if I’m staying on track most days, I’m really happy with that.

I’m not quitting or giving up, though. I have that task list/calendar on the front of the refrigerator and every day I mark off what tasks I’m getting done. My self-discipline is so much better than it used to be. Even when I “fall” off track, I don’t overdo it, it doesn’t last all day long, and I’m learning to find a healthy balance with everything. My sleep is getting better again with the decreased alcohol and junk food. My workouts are going well and I’m loving the results that I’m getting. My self-confidence has leveled up.

So far today, I got in an early morning workout, ate a healthy breakfast, and have half of the day’s water done. Between attempting 75 Hard and adding these smaller challenges, I’ve developed some really awesome healthy habits and I hope to keep the momentum going.

Like my friend, Melissa, at A Handful of Spinach says, “give yourself grace” when you fall off track. Every moment, every day is a fresh start. Every stumble is a lesson on how to do better. But on the days that you stumble, be kind to yourself, pat yourself on the back and tell yourself that you’ve got this!

  1. Aww, thanks for the shout out! Yep! When we fall now, we don’t fall as far down the hill. And, we get right back up. I wish I could teach my 30 year old self this lesson! We are getting so much better as we age just like your blog name says!
