Better Together

Good morning and happy Father’s Day to all of the wonderful dads out there!  It’s David’s weekend to work, so we’ll be celebrating next weekend with the kids.

Has anyone been out and about since all of the COVID restrictions have been lifted?  I’m still really nervous about going out, other than to work and the grocery store.  I took the day off on Monday and David and I went to Lowe’s to pick out some flowers and flooring and it wasn’t very busy, which was good, but it was hit and miss with people wearing their masks.  We then went to a restaurant and had an early lunch and that was actually a really nice experience.  It wasn’t busy and all of the servers were wearing masks.  It felt good to at least be out for a little bit.

But then on Friday, we decided to go out for a drink and something to eat and since it was mid-afternoon, we figured that we’d be okay.  We went to one of our favorite places that’s located in the mall and we were shocked by how busy the mall was.  And very few of us were wearing masks.  We went inside the restaurant and there were only a few people at the bar, so we sat there, but by the time we left, the bar was starting to get really busy and people were sitting way too close to each other, so I’m glad that we were leaving at that point.  We then decided to stop at the grocery store to pick up a few things and by that time, my anxiety level was pretty high.  The store was busy and it was a store that we don’t normally go to, so I couldn’t find what we needed and we left feeling pretty frustrated.  So many people are not following the safety guidelines and it just makes it really hard to go out.

I’ve talked to so many people, though, that have similar feelings.  Many of us don’t mind being at home.  It feels safe there, and it’s our haven.  But I get that not everyone feels that way.  I really do.  But I just wish that people would take more precautions.  They seem to forget that it’s not just about them.  It’s about others’ around them who they could unknowingly infect.

Okay, enough about that.  On to something more positive and exciting!

Five years ago, I ran my first marathon.  Memories have been popping up on my Facebook page and I still look back on those days with a lot of disbelief and awe that I was able to move my legs for 26.2 miles.  And all of the training!  My god, I ran so many miles leading up to that day.  I didn’t let injuries, lost toenails, or blisters stop me.  I spent countless hours running.

After that, I decided that I needed to do another marathon.  Then came a 75-mile relay race.

Following that relay race, I just couldn’t run anymore.  I was sick of spending hours running.  My knees hurt.  I was tired and burned out.

I went months feeling a bit lost.  I thrive on goals and challenges and I had none.  I gained 20 pounds and felt like crap.

And then I discovered Beachbody and as you know from recent posts, I eventually became a coach and now I’m helping others with goals and challenges and I couldn’t be more happier.  I’ve lost that 20 pounds and I’m in the best shape of my life and the best part is that I no longer have to spend hours training and working out.  I’m only working out 30-40 minutes a day, 6 days a week.  Compared to training for marathons, it seems so much more manageable and sustainable.  And my knees don’t hurt anymore!

Tomorrow I start the last week of my current 8-week workout program, Barre Blend.  I’ve loved this program so much!  But what sets this program apart from the others I’ve done is that this time I did the program with an accountability group and being able to see the progress that these women have made throughout the program has been truly inspiring and motivational!  Pounds and inches have been lost, strength and flexibility have been gained.  Many of these women hadn’t worked out in a really long time, but are now showing up every day to do their workouts.  Some of the women have been working out for a while, but were challenged by this workout program and are really excited about the progress they have made.  Everyone wants to keep going and we are having a virtual meeting this week to decide a game plan for when we finish the current round of Barre Blend!

Getting healthy and fit really is better when you do it with others who are there to support and encourage!  Better together is our group’s motto!

  1. I’ve been getting out a bit more and I’m okay with it. I’m still of course wearing my mask and social distancing. I’m starting to get back in that funk that I was in when we first started staying at home. I’m fighting it and trying my best to stay positive. Getting out a bit with caution is helping. But I feel guilty when I do go out so it’s not quite an all good thing for me.


    1. I agree, it’s feels good to go out and experience a bit of “normal”, but I worry the whole time so it’s hard to be in the moment and enjoy. Stay safe, my friend, and I definitely can understand the funk and hope you’re able to find a way out of it soon!


  2. I am disappointed that since the lift that it seems people have forgotten the “5”. We have not gone to any bars, restaurants, malls or farmers market since we have continued to avoid crowds. People have seemed to have forgotten social distancing & hand washing. I wear a mask at work as they are required & also at the grocery store. I know that it is time to start living, but I wish people would continue to exercise caution. I still carry disinfection wipes in my purse & will likely continue the practice. Hopefully there will be a vaccine soon.
