Learning to savor

TGIF, my friends!  I know, it’s been forever and a day, but April has been full of challenges.  I spent the first 10 days sick with the flu.  I’m still not feeling 100% better; it has been a very slow recovery.  I also hurt my back and experienced some sciatic pain, but luckily with some stretches, it resolved after a few days.

In addition, I feel like I’ve definitely entered the hell of menopause.  I’m experiencing hot flashes on a daily basis and I am crabby.  If you’ve never experienced a hot flash, imagine that the inside of your body’s temperature jumps up to 1000 degrees and the clothing on your body burns your skin and all you want to do is dive into a giant pool of ice water.

Our dog, Kali, had to have a second eye surgery because the first surgery for her entropion wasn’t corrective enough.  So she has been spending additional time in the cone of shame.  But Kali has a great attitude and doesn’t let it faze her.

Basically, I’ve spent the first half of April feeling sorry for myself.  Understandable, I suppose, but it’s getting old and I just want to ditch the bad attitude.

Although I had to take a hiatus because of my illness, I’m continuing to take the online course, The Science of Well-Being, and the week’s lesson was about savoring and gratitude.  It was just what I needed to get myself in gear.

I have so many things to savor and feel grateful for.  Yes, I’ve had a few bad weeks, but I also have so many things to feel grateful for.  My homework is to pause and savor things and to note at the end of each day the things that I’m grateful for.  So this week I’ve worked on being mindful and savoring the good things as they are happening.  Here are some examples:

  1.  Savoring a good meal, a cup of tea, a great bloody Mary from my favorite breakfast diner, and a beer from one of my favorite breweries.
  2.  Savoring the time spent with a friend who I haven’t seen in a while.
  3.  Savoring the times when I don’t feel like there is an fricking inferno burning inside of my body.

Things that I’m grateful for:

  1.  Kayla had a follow-up yesterday with her oncologist and while the cyst is still in her ovary, it hasn’t increased in size or changed in appearance, so no surgery or treatment is required at this time.
  2.  Kayla has a strong support system.  At every appointment, she has her parents, her godmother, her fiancé, and her sister.  We fill up the waiting room and exam room and the staff jokes and laughs about it.  We hope that at some point, the visits become so routine and uneventful that she won’t need all of us with her.  But then again, it’s time that we get to spend together, so the tradition may just continue.
  3. The weather this weekend is supposed to be fantastic.  The thought of spending time outdoors in warm sunshine makes my heart sing!  And even better, the kids will be coming over on Sunday for a family Easter celebration.

  1. Oh that sucks that you were sick. I was sick in January and I was out for about 2 weeks. I hate that! Glad you are on the mend. I was right there with you with the hot flashes. I tried everything natural possible but I broke down and am now taking Prempro. The new studies out there are saying that it isn’t as risky as they once thought and the benefits are tremendous! Funny story…when I was sick, I forgot to take my prempro and I kept getting hot flashes. I thought I was just getting a fever and cold sweats and that I wasn’t getting any better. Once I figured out I was forgetting to take my prempro, I got better. I’m glad your daughter’s cyst hasn’t changed. I am praying for it to go away on its own. I savor my overnight oats that I make for my breakfast every morning. I’ve been putting frozen pineapple in them and they are to die for. I’m grateful for being able to work out every day this week! And really so much more!

    1. I’m sorry to hear that you were sick in Jan. I’m trying black cohosh supplements for now to see if they help with my menopausal symptoms, but at some point, I may have to do something like Prempro! It’s reassuring to hear that it’s helped you. While I was sick, it was hard to decide if I had a fever or hot flashes – not fun! I’ll be so glad to get back to working out. I still have a cough and get short of breath, but it’s much better, so I hope to get back to my workout routine by next week. Have a wonderful Easter weekend, friend!


  2. There is been a terrible flu like cold going around. I struggled with it for weeks. I am finally feeling better but it’s taking a while. Menopause can be a real bitch. I know exactly what you’re saying about hot flashes. I had those all the time. It will pass. The one nice thing about going through menopause is not having a period any longer. What am I savoring lately? I think it’s the warmer sunny weather. We haven’t had any here in Wisconsin for too long. I am so glad to hear that Kayla is doing well. Prayers do work. Hope you elaborate more on your online course.

    1. Paula, glad to hear you’re feeling better. It’s not fun being sick, especially when it seems to linger. Hopefully now that the weather is getting nicer, we’ll be back to our old selves! I will definitely be talking more about the online course, as it’s very interesting and I really feel like I’m getting a lot out of it! Have a wonderful day!
