Arizona Vacation

Sorry for the long absence, but it’s been a bit crazy around here!  We recently did a family road trip to Arizona and then when we returned, my laptop had some issues that had to be fixed.  And just acclimating back to normal life after being on vacation for two weeks can be really rough.

We had an AMAZING time in Arizona.  I fell instantly in love with that area of the country.  I loved the weather, the scenery, the outdoors….guys, I just want to move there.  Like, NOW.

Because plane tickets for a family of four is quite pricey, we decided to drive to Arizona.  I know.  23 hours of driving in the car didn’t sound all that appealing, but I tried to look at it as an adventure.  Going down to Phoenix, we drove about 14 hours and then stopped at this town called Tucumcari, New Mexico.  The famous Route 66 goes through the town.  It was a very brief visit, as we got to our motel at 10:00 p.m., showered, slept and got up bright and early the next morning.  We ate at a nice little diner across the street, had a hot breakfast and then we were on the road again.

We arrived in Phoenix and stayed with my college friend, Eileen, who I haven’t seen in about 25 years.  Her husband was out of town, and I have yet to meet him, but Eileen was a wonderful hostess and we had a great time!  Some highlights of our stay in Phoenix:

We spent much of our time in Eileen’s backyard pool:

Seeing the Cubs play the Diamondbacks:

I’m smiling, despite the fact that the Cubs lost! Eileen was happy, though!

I also got a couple of runs in while I was in Phoenix, which went well.  I was worried it might be too warm, but in the mornings, the temperatures in Phoenix were perfect!

It was really good to reunite with Eileen and we made lots of future plans to get together.  We’re not waiting another 25 years!

Then we were off to the Grand Canyon.  On the way there, we made a bit of a detour and visited Sedona, which is GORGEOUS, people!

And on the road again to the Grand Canyon, after making a stop in Flagstaff to have a late lunch!  We arrived at the Grand Canyon and stayed for three days.  If any of you have been to the Grand Canyon, you know that pictures and words cannot describe it’s stunning beauty.  Awesome doesn’t even cover it.  And if you haven’t been to the Grand  Canyon, GO.

The first day, we hiked a trail that was labeled as “difficult”.  We hiked down about 1,120 feet and considered going further, but I’m glad that we didn’t because the climb back up was challenging!  My marathon training definitely helped me out!  The second day, we decided to just walk part of the South rim, and got in a nice 6-mile walk and saw some amazing scenery.  Here are some photos:

Sadly, it was time to go home.  We had yet another long drive ahead of us, but we saw some amazing sights as we drove through Utah and Colorado.  First, Utah:

And then, beautiful Colorado:

Wow, snow?!?!?  That was cool!

We’d been in the car way too long at this point, I think:

We drove about 15 hours and stopped to sleep at a hotel in Nebraska.  Then the next morning we drove the rest of the way home, exhausted and glad to be home!  I’m so happy to be home and was excited to see my two dogs and two cats, but I have to say that this was one of the best trips we’ve ever had and I miss my friend, Eileen and Arizona.  I love it out there and can’t wait to visit again!

Before I sign off, just wanted to give you an update on my marathon training.  My marathon is next Sunday.  NEXT SUNDAY!!!!  Holy crap, I can’t believe it’s almost here.  This week will be an easy taper week, with a few short, easy runs and some days of rest.  I’m nervous, but very excited.  I feel as ready as I can be.  I completely followed my training program; I stayed injury-free.  I don’t think there’s anything more I could have done, so all I can do is my best and hope that I can finish.

  1. Your family vacation looked wonderful. Kevin and I did a similar driving vacation a few years ago. I love the southwest and the Grand Canyon and Sedona cannot be described with words but your pictures captured it wonderfully. You are ready for that marathon. I can’t wait to hear a recap after you finish. 🙂
