My birthday recap

I had such a wonderful day celebrating my birthday yesterday!  It started off with accompanying my youngest daughter to college orientation.  It took up most of the day, but it’s so exciting that she’s now registered for her classes!  I’m so proud and excited for her!  I’d also like to give a shout-out to the caterer who provided veggie burgers and fresh fruit at the luncheon.  🙂

My husband and daughter took me out for a birthday dinner at my favorite restaurant, Trumpet Blossom Café.  It’s a vegan restaurant, and we don’t eat there very often because it’s a bit pricey.  As a vegan, though, I can’t even describe how wonderful it is to walk in a restaurant and know that EVERY item on the menu is vegan.  Because of this, however, making choices can be difficult!  I managed, though, and this is what I ate.

We started out with a white bean and sunflower seed pate.  The flavor was a bit bland (our family loves hummus and we had hoped it would taste more like hummus), but the fries were really good, and the red pepper aioli dipping sauce was outstanding!

I decided to try the polenta cakes with BBQ sauce.  It came with two polenta cakes, smoked tempeh, and grilled seasonal vegetables.  It was delicious!

Dessert was a crumble with apples and pears, topped with a coconut whipped cream.  I forgot to take a picture!  It was really yummy, though!

How did my omnivore family enjoy the experience?  As I mentioned, we were disappointed with the pate, but we loved the fries.  My husband ordered a Mediterranean salad and while he loved it, he wished it had been bigger.  He also had falafels for the first time and enjoyed those, as did my daughter, so I’ll be making those at home!  My daughter had a baked mac-n-cheese, but she didn’t like it and said she preferred mine!  Both the hubby and daughter LOVED their desserts.  My husband had a strawberry cake, while my daughter had strawberry ice cream.

Afterwards, we went to a running store, where my husband bought me a new pair of running shoes – Brooks Glycerins.  As soon as I put these shoes on, my feet did a happy dance!  Like pillows on my feet!  I can’t wait to try them out on my run tomorrow.

And then we headed to Barnes & Noble because my daughter had a gift card she wanted to spend, and I bought another birthday present for myself:

I love the Oh She Glows website and use recipes from there all of the time and so this cookbook has been on my wish list!

My husband and I finished out the day with an episode of Game of Thrones.  We only have three episodes left in Season 3!  What are we going to do with ourselves until Season 4 comes out on DVD?!?!

Overall, it was a FANTASTIC birthday!

  1. Happy birthday – what a lovely way to celebrate, all around! I totally relate to the vegan restaurant experience. I am so used to finding the couple of menu items that can be made vegan, that the couple of times I’ve gone to a purely vegan restaurant it takes me forever to decide what I want (in a perfect world, one of everything 🙂 ).
